The Malaghan Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) is New Zealand’s leading independent biomedical research institute, with a focus on breakthrough discoveries in immunology and immunotherapy. We have over 100 staff committed to finding cures for diseases using the body’s own immune system. 

We have recently commenced an exciting phase I clinical trial of third-generation chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells for patients with relapsed and refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We are looking to appoint an experienced and driven haematology or oncology registrar as our new Clinical Research Fellow for the trial. This will be a full-time, fixed-term, 1-2 year role depending on the right applicant.

The successful Fellow will be based at the Institute, also spending time between the Wellington Blood & Cancer Centre and the Clinical Trials Unit at CCDHB. You will work with the Clinical Director, Clinical Trials Nurse, Quality Facilitator and the GMP team to gain experience in CAR T-cell manufacture, clinical trial design and conduct, CAR T-cell toxicity management and cellular therapy quality systems. This Fellowship can be combined with a post-graduate degree qualification.

You will have a professional and personable persona, able to liaise between different professionals within the cell therapy field. Your knack for prioritising will lend to the efficient management of your workload between in the Institute and the trial site at Wellington Regional Hospital. An analytical thinker, you will be proficient in solving problems, from initial information gathering to a well-considered solution and subsequent monitoring and evaluation.

Applicants must hold or be eligible for registration with the New Zealand Medical Council. 

Education and experience:

  • Medical degree MBBS or equivalent
  • Completed Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Basic Physician Training including RACP Written and Clinical Examinations
  • Completed at least 2 years of Advanced Training in Clinical Haematology or Joint Laboratory and Clinical Haematology
  • Experience in lymphoma treatment, stem cell transplantation, and/or in the conduct and reporting of clinical trials are desirable.

Key skills:

  • Competency and specialist knowledge in the diagnosis and management of patients with haematological malignancies
  • Understanding of basic principles of research methodology and laboratory assay techniques
  • Competency in procedures such as bone marrow biopsies
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to work within a multidisciplinary team of laboratory scientists, quality personnel and health care professionals 
  • Analytical skills to draft and edit complex documents related to cell therapy protocols and procedures.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Undertake required training at CCDHB.
  • Contribute to trial-related activities and committees
  • Conduct CAR-T cell trial procedures in conjunction with a trial nurse, from initial participant consent right through to follow-up and management of adverse events.
  • Complete case report forms and AE reports in conjunction with trial coordinator and investigators.
  • Undertake and complete a Masters of Clinical Research by thesis at VUW.

  • Base salary of $87k-$93k depending on experience.
